Somatic therapy for birth and postpartum

Pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum year happen to a body, and some of what they leave behind cannot be talked out because it was never stored in words. Somatic therapy works where this season actually lives: in the nervous system. The therapists on this page are somatically trained, licensed in New York.

The approach

What somatic therapy is, and what sessions look like

Somatic therapy tracks what your body is doing while you talk: where the breath stops, what tightens, when the system revs or shuts down. Sessions blend conversation with body-based work, grounding, breath, movement, and paced release, teaching your nervous system to complete responses that got frozen mid-event.

It is not massage and it is not mindfulness homework. It is clinical work with the part of you that keeps flinching after the mind has decided everything is fine.

What somatic work helps with after birth

It is a strong fit for birth trauma held physically, panic at medical settings, a body that cannot settle even when the baby sleeps, and the touched-out, electric overstimulation that fuels maternal rage. Polyvagal-informed clinicians work the same territory through the vagal system.

It also serves parents who have done plenty of talk therapy and can narrate their story perfectly while their body still refuses to believe it is over. When insight has plateaued, the body is usually the next door.

Choosing well

Finding the right somatic therapist

Look for named somatic training, such as Somatic Experiencing or sensorimotor work, plus perinatal experience with birth and postpartum bodies. Ask what a typical session looks like; a real somatic clinician will describe something concrete and body-first.

The Mativa standard

What makes Mativa different

Mativa is a specialized directory of licensed perinatal therapists in New York, where every therapist works exclusively in perinatal mental health. Mativa stays intentionally small and focused on this one field, so you are not sorting through a general list hoping to find someone who understands this season of life.

Good to know

Questions, answered

What is somatic therapy in one sentence?

Somatic therapy treats stress and trauma by working directly with the body and nervous system, helping physical responses that got stuck complete and settle, rather than working through conversation alone.

Why would I need body work when I can talk about my birth calmly?

Being able to tell the story calmly while your body still reacts, insomnia, startle, tension, dread at appointments, is the classic sign that the memory settled in words but not in the nervous system. That gap is precisely what somatic work closes.

Does somatic therapy work virtually?

Yes. Somatic clinicians guide attention, breath, and movement over video routinely, and many postpartum clients prefer working from home. In-person is available when hands-on grounding or simple preference calls for it.

Is this the same as polyvagal therapy?

They are cousins. Polyvagal-informed work is one framework within the body-based family, focused on the vagal states behind fight, flight, and shutdown. Several therapists here hold both trainings, and the practical experience in session is similar.

Why does my body still react when my mind knows I am safe?

Stress and trauma live in the nervous system, not just in thoughts, which is why understanding alone does not always calm the body. Somatic therapy works directly with those physical responses to help your whole system settle.
